Every damn clamp.

...That's what it took to glue up both gunwales at the same time. But now that the rails and breasthooks are installed, albeit rough for the time being, I'll now move on to the Arctic Tern's bulkheads, centerboard case and other misc. items.

Shots of the Methow

This is the Methow Valley of North central Washington State in the first photo.Shot from my pulling boat in Pearrygin Lake one dramatic afternoon this past fall.

And in the second photo, this is the Methow Valley from the windows of my boatshop one winter morning not too long ago. Gardner Mountain looming beneath a stubborn moon. Did I really just write; stubborn moon?

In the third photo are a bunch of dumbasses playing croquet down the side of a mountain. The suspicious looking person in the white tux jacket inspired me with stories of croqueting down, through and around Aspen in the seventies. There may have been alcohol involved

Herman

My Joel White, Shearwater pulling boat; Herman Getting ready to leave the shop for her/his maiden voyage. And loaded and getting ready to circle Hartstene Island, September 2011.
It took around 220 hours to build Herman. The first 20 were in 2003, the remaining 200 during the winter of 2010/11.
The Shearwater design is a 16' long, three planked interpretation of an Oselvar Faering. Built of lapstrake plywood with two watertight compartments he/she weighs in the neighborhood of 135 pounds.

I love Randy Newman. And when this song was released it struck a major chord inside me. Although he plays a bunch of minor seventh chords throughout the song

Santorum?

spreadingsantorum.com

Santorum? Really? Did we somehow return to 2004? Is the fat little ghost of Karl Rove here to punish us for thoughtful, intelligent thought? Shall woman give back their shoes and diaphragms in the name of family based upon an arbitrary, poorly written work of historical fiction? It must be a dream.
I'm a touch ambivalent about including the santorum link. There's always the remote chance he could gain favor through sympathy regarding his frothyness. It's just That the whole Santorum as despicable effluent is just so thoroughly inspired.
For a brief moment Alice got  a taste of the snowy outside world before retreating to her cocoon for the next six weeks whilst Ted gets fitted out. Both rollovers occurred on days when we received pretty significant snowfalls.Should probably be skiing today.

Iain Oughtred, Arctic Tern

See. It really did happen.

Friday, February 17, 2012

Today we roll the Arctic Tern over. I've been referring to the two boats as; Ted and Alice. Today's rollover happens to Alice and then I begin finishing Ted. That almost sounds naughty. Pictures will follow if we remember.

Winter project

This winter I've been building an Iain Oughtred, Arctic Tern for a client in Portland. I'm building a second hull as well for myself or some lucky, yet to be determined future owner.

The Arctic Tern is an 18', half decked, rowing and sailing beach cruiser. Built of glued clinker plywood, she'll be dry, light and lovely.

First Post

It's morning. I'm drinking coffee. I don't get this. Maybe I should go back to Facebook. When does the money start rolling in?
